What to do for Dental Emergencies

Posted .

Accidents and emergencies are facts of life. At some time in our lives, we’ve all been to the emergency room at the hospital. But there can also be dental emergencies, just like there are other health emergencies. Do you know what to do in such an emergency? Here are some tips that you can use when a dental emergency happens.

First, give Thomas G. Schleicher, DDS PLC a call at 804-526-0231 as soon as possible. We’ll need to schedule an appointment for you to see Dr.Schleicher , and we’ll be able to advise you about what you need to do before we see you.

If you have lost a permanent tooth, keep it moist. Try to put the tooth back in the socket, but make sure not to touch the root. If you can’t do that, place it between your cheek and gums or in milk, and then get to our office as soon as you can. If you have a cracked tooth, you will want to rinse your mouth with warm water and put a cold compress on your face to keep down the swelling. If an object is caught in your teeth, try to remove it with dental floss. If that doesn’t work, wait until you can see the dentist.

If you lose a filling, a piece of sugarless gum makes a good temporary replacement, or you can use an over-the-counter dental cement. But remember that is only a temporary fix: you need to see us as soon as possible. If you lose a crown, bring it with you if you can, when you come to see us. You might try slipping it back on, and holding it in place with dental cement or toothpaste. But once again, that is only a temporary fix until we can see you!

For toothaches and abscesses, rinse with warm water, try a cold compress, and a pain reliever. The most important thing you can do in any dental emergency is to contact us in Colonial Heights, Virginia, at 804-526-0231 as soon as you can. We’ll work to get you in as quickly as possible.
